Plans for a major shopping center came to a standstill in the face of opposition from a small, but very vocal group of local activists. With legal support from statewide and national anti-growth organizations, the group managed to tie the project up in environmental and growth management issues for years. |

 |
sgwcreative's public affairs principal devised and executed a strategy to break the deadlock over the project through a series of town meetings, dubbed "Redmond Talk of the Town." The focus of the effort was to identify and mobilize hundreds of non-activist citizens for a fair, balanced discussion of the issues.
Parallel to the involvement effort were a political campaign to change the make-up of the municipal administration and a direct mail campaign using materials that helped citizens visualize the project's place in the community.

The shopping center developers came to be regarded as valuable members of the local business community; a new mayor and city council approached valid issues in a more balanced way; and the project evolved in a way that ties in with the downtown community. It continues to grow today as an integral part of downtown and as a vibrant focal point for the community at large. |
